Better Every Day

Sometimes when you are on automatic pilot and you go through life, you miss the tiny details which can have an impact on the bigger picture.  Sometimes your story line of your plot plot changes.  Reflecting on how I manage to deal with my stuff, I will admit, occasionally through procrastination, stress eating, indecisiveness and giving in to some negative thinking.

Every day life presents certain struggles, like losing your keys, going grocery shopping, again; work, family time, household chores, laundry, laundry, laundry and even working out.

I am all too familiar with meltdowns.  I am raising a daughter with a major disability and when things get too overwhelming and frustrating, its like a tea pot whistling, you know the water is simmering then it comes to a rolling boil, and then it happens.  I realize that life is for a very long time.  And even though I'm a little more than at the halfway point of my story, I am still determined to have many awesome, fulfilling and exciting years ahead.  That is why I am a true believer in being a change agent to help others realize their true potential through inspiring, motivating and helping others craft a healthy foundation.  Once your "infrastructure" is laid, you can begin to build upon.  When you feel your structure getting weak, you then have a choice.  You can succumb to it, or you can throw in the towel and give up.  Its easier right?

But, if you're like me, then you will agree its important to stay focused and positive, forgive yourself, and find determination to push forward.  Each day is a chance to become the best version of yourself!

It is your mindset and the very thing you BELIEVE that dictates your actions.  Getting your mind right is the first order of business. Take out a piece of paper and start writing out your goals.  What do you want for this year?  Getting back to basics and focusing on little details like exercising, portion control, making healthy food choices, fitting in at least 30 minutes of movement, getting to sleep earlier are all ways to promote a healthy lifestyle.  When you think healthy, you eat healthy and when you eat healthy, you think healthy.  It has a domino effect.
No matter what you do, no matter how many times you mess up and think to yourself, "there's no point to carry on" no matter how many people tell you that you can't do it -- keep going.  Don't quit.  Don't quit because a month from now you will be that much closer to your goal than you were now.  Yesterday you said tomorrow, so make today and every day count.

I'd love to hear your feedback.  Do you agree?  How do you get through your ups & downs?  If you want an extra layer of support, I'd love to add you to my daily fitness & nutrition accountability group https://www.facebook.com/groups/147417735425442/

5 days to a healthier YOU

I am starting another free 5 day clean eating "bootcamp" style group as part of my Get Lean in 2015 series.  Let me help you take action to focus on becoming the best version of you!

One of my challengers lost 9 lbs in just 5 days, she was able to follow the one page shopping list which is broken down into categories by the supermarket isles.  All recipes are super simple to prepare and she was able to make 1 dinner that included  her family. (That's huge in my house) ;)  Win-win!!

If you are curious and interested in securing a spot, comment below with your e-mail or go to fb.com/mariapaulercio and private message me and I will give you more details.

Are you ready Summer?

I am really excited about this program, and for so many reasons.

Nutrition can be so complicated and difficult at times. Enter ➡ The 21 Day Fix. In my opinion, what sets this program apart is the color coded containers. These containers keep the concept of portion control fresh and exciting. Weight Watchers is a great plan which offers similar guidance in terms of what and how much to eat but you still have to weigh, measure and count. It can get pretty boring and then loses its appeal. Its tedious. I'm sure you will agree, everything is a process and your results are dependent upon how well you pay attention to details. That makes a huge difference.

The 21 Day Fix offers you the freedom to fill these containers without weighing, measuring and counting. Once you quickly catch on to the colors and their contents (which is entirely up to you; you don't have to eat anything you despise). You choose what you like; the portions tell you how much! How cool is that? And, to open your lunch box and see those cute containers knowing you are not only feeding yourself what you like, but the correct amount!!! Now that is totally liberating!

Reading over the eating plan and the materials I have, so far this program definitely gets high marks with nutrition plan from my perspective. My focus over the past year with Integrative Nutrition hasn't been just solely about food, although that does play a major role in making an impact on your health. I think its super SIMPLE and SUPER effective because it helps you make necessary lifestyle changes, teaches portion control, and encourages 30 minute exercise sessions. I will be conducting test groups to experiment and collect data on following this program to the T. Each month I will be holding groups on the 2nd and 4th Monday.

Let me just say that if nutrition is your weakest link in your weight loss equation then this is gonna totally change everything for you! I am even more convinced that this concept will yield results!

Don't wait....start NOW

As 2014 approaches, you may be thinking about what you'd like to accomplish when the new year rolls in.  Its a time to introspectively take inventory of where you are and figure out where you'd like to go.  Wondering what the most popular resolutions were for 2013?  My research led me to this list of the top 40:

  1. Read more books
  2. Save more money
  3. Lose weight
  4. Redecorate
  5. Take better photos
  6. Go traveling
  7. Sell old unwanted stuff on eBay
  8. Buy a tablet
  9. Organize photos
10. Do something for charity
11. Spend more time with kids
12. Buy a Sunday paper
13. Less TV time
14. Connect my computer to my TV
15. Leave work on time more often
16. Less time on Facebook
17. Totally revamp my wardrobe
18. Try a new hairstyle
19. Get a six-pack
20. Eat less chocolate
21. Socialize more in real life rather than Facebook
22. Drink less alcohol
23. Buy less coffee from Starbucks/big chains
24. Start my own business
25. Tell someone I have feelings for them
26. Quit smoking
27. Gain a promotion
28. Learn how to use Twitter
29. Run a half or full marathon
30. Call people more than text
31. Cut someone out of my life who isn't good for me
32. Meet online contacts in real life
33. Watch less reality TV
34. Text people less
35. Try to save relationship
36. Try extreme sports
37. Get better at social networking
38. Stop contacting/going back to an ex-partner
39. Have a face-to-face with my boss to find out where I stand
40.
Do a bungee jump

What ever you decide, don't wait.  Do it now.  Get a head start and focus on small habits that will make an impact.  Make a dent, don't scratch the surface.

If you think about it, all 40 have a common denominator -- they relate to your health on some level (nutrition, fitness, mental, spiritual, emotional etc).  Some are directly impacted while others, indirectly.

We have the same amount of time every day to work on becoming THE best version of ourselves. What's even more exciting is that we get to decide, what, how, when, where and if your WHY is strong enough, it will blow past any excuse that gets in your way.  So, get busy living and stop waiting!  And just so you know, #40 will never be on my list!  What about you?

Do you set mini goals?

Setting big goals can be overwhelming.  Breaking it down into smaller, specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely goals can help you stay focused.

I started thinking about some pretty awesome generic goals that everyone could improve on:

Ten Daily Mini Habit Ideas
1. Compliment one person
2. Think two positive thoughts
3. Meditate for one minute
4. Name three things you’re thankful for
5. Do one push-up
6. Write 50 words
7. Read two pages
8. Do ten jumping jacks
9. Go outside and take 100 steps
10. Drink one glass of water
You can change nearly any area of your life; and at one mini habit at a time, it’s easier than you think.
When you remove the pressure and expectations, you allow yourself to start.
What mini habit(s) will you start today?

Tips For Staying Fit When Stressed

When stressed, many people tend to put on more weight for various reasons.  Unfortunately, there’s something you can do to curtail weight gain and even get more fit while reducing stress at the same time. For staying fit when stressed, I try these recommendations:

Relaxation Techniques:
You can stop the damage caused by chronic stress with the regular practice of relaxation techniques. These can trigger the relaxation response, which stops the cascade of changes that can occur when you’re stressed, including changes that contribute to weight gain. Some of my favorite relaxation techniques include:   Yoga, Martial arts, Journaling, Laughter, and, okay, sex.

Healthy Munchies:
When stressed, many people tend to eat more, and crave foods that are high in salt, sugar and fat. If you find yourself prone to the munchies when you’re feeling the crunch of stress, if it seems too hard to control your cravings, you can really help yourself by switching to more healthy fare for snacking. The following have worked for many:

Carrot sticks have a satisfying crunch, and are good for you, too. Dipped in low-fat ranch, they’re packed with flavor and aren’t too bad for your bod.
Edamame, a type of snackable soy bean, is delicious, healthy, and fun to eat, if you get the variety that’s still in the pod.
Sunflower seeds (try low-salt or unsalted varieties for better health) have protein and nutrients, and are pretty yummy. If you get them in the shell, they give your hands something to do, and it’s hard to eat too many when you have to shell each one.
Rather than popping open a can of soda, which is packed with empty calories and sugar, which can send you on a downward spiral of mood swings later, opt for sparkling water; you’ll feel like you’re getting a treat, and your body will, too.
There’s always gum. If you’re a discreet chewer, you can turn one of those snacking sessions—ones where you’re really not hungry but want something in your mouth—into guilt-free flavorful fun. Just try not to blow too many bubbles if you’re at the office.

Eat At Home:
Another reason busy, stressed people tend to gain weight is that they more often eat fast food; after a busy day running around, you may not have time to come home and cook something from scratch. But meals you make are usually much better for you. And cooking at home can save you money, too, which may indirectly decrease your stress level by putting you under less financial strain. And it’s easier than you think.

Work Activity Into Your Life:
Do you want to work out, but find yourself short the extra hours a week it would take to go to the gym? You may be able to remedy this with time management techniques, or you can work exercise into your life by finding simple ways to move more. Taking the stairs rather than the elevator, for example, or going for a walk during your lunch break are easy ways to do this. You can also park further away from wherever it is you go, forcing yourself to walk a little more before you get to your destination. You can even stop, drop, and do a few sets of push-ups every hour or two to keep your blood moving and slowly build muscle. You can get more exercise at home by doing active housework, playing active games with your kids.  Let me help you get started, click here

Turn Off The T.V.:
Or at least be selective. Rather than chilling in front of the tube because you’re too exhausted to do anything else, only to look up hours later and realize you’ve wasted most of your evening and didn’t get much lasting benefit from the experience, see if you can unwind with some soothing music. Chances are, you won’t spend as much time listening to music as you would flipping from show to show, and you might end up doing something more creative or productive with your time, like journaling, calling a friend, or spending quality time with your loved ones.  (Next time you think about things you wish you had time to do, remember the time you could free up with less television!) If there are shows you really don’t want to miss, at least record them ahead of time, so you can watch them at your convenience, fast-forward through commercials, and then turn the T.V. off.

Once you incorporate some or all of these simple strategies into your life, staying fit when stressed should be much less of a challenge. And, best of all, you can experience less stress and better health in the process!

Check Point

Today is the last day of the Alpha round.  I have 2 workouts left to complete week 5; Lower Focus and Total Body Circuit.  Tomorrow is STATurday and I'm down 10 lbs since 7/8/13.  I was able to shed 2 inches off my hips, an inch off my waist and 1/2" off each thigh.  Monday, 8/12 starts the Beta round.

If I could do it, so can you!  I am closer to 50 (years young) and can tell you I have never felt more energized, stronger and more confident.  My weapons of choice are Focus T25 and replacing just one meal a day with Shakeology; and interpreting the nutritional guidelines to make it more doable for me and how it fits in my lifestyle.

I can help you take that first step and guarantee your results under my guidance and give you the support to make your experience successful and results driven.  It's up to you to invest in yourself. What you do now will have an impact on your short and long term future.  If you're ready then contact me maria365@aol.com and put In the subject line. "I'm ready."

Become the BEST version of YOU

If your goal is to lean out, shed weight and improve your health, in my opinion, the key to success is to have a plan, know your numbers (calorie intake vs. how much you burn) and forgive yourself if you mess up.

I rely on two apps to guide me towards my goals:  myfitnesspal (connect with me at www.myfitnesspal.com/maria365) and my Fitbit.

At the end of the day you can NEVER make a mistake with food.  Everything you do is an experiment.

So rather than saying, "Oh my gosh i really messed up today."  Say, "Wow, that was another food experiment that didn't work."

Through trial and error we will be able to find the foods that work for us, rather than staying on a fixed rigid diet.  Take your blinders off.  Our head will say one thing and our body will say another.  Find what works for you!

Tips for getting lean

If your goal is to lean out, then follow these tips:

  • Eat at least 5 times per day
  • Stop eating 3 hours before bed
  • eat lots of lean protein and veggies (minimal starches)
  • drink plenty of water
  • avoid soda and similar junk
  • enjoy healthy fats like nuts, seeds, olives and avocados
  • when dining out, if you don't see it on the menu, ask to have it your way
Is it worth it to go organic?  Well it can't hurt, especially when it comes to soy and dairy.  Organic crops, including soy, cannot be genetically modified.  This means that by paying a little more for organic tempeh, you're avoiding those weird GMOs, not to mention pesticide residues.

With organic dairy, you're avoiding all the hormones and antibiotics they feed conventionally raised cows.  And a recent English study shows that not only is organic milk more nutritionally consistent, but contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids.

As for organic produce, science has yet to determine how much more nutritious it is, think about this, you're still avoiding all the chemical pesticides and herbicides they load on conventional fruits and veggies.

Eat well-balanced meals and remember that excess calories, even if they're from food that's fat free and high in protein, will turn to excess weight. No matter what the latest fad diet says, extra calories equal extra weight!

Stick with eating plans you can maintain indefinitely. Remember that no matter how hard you're working out, if you're consuming too many calories, you'll never see the muscles that lie beneath layers of fatty tissue.

May Challenge

Last month I tweeted:  No candy, no cake, no donuts, no muffins, no white bread, no chips, no fast food, no pastries, no ice cream. Do it for 21 days = #results

My April challenge was a success.  We focused on making positive changes, eating clean and fitting in exercise.  Being in a group setting and seeing posts from others who are doing it too makes you feel like you are not alone and empowers you to stay focused.

As we turn the page on the calendar to a brand new month, realize that real results require time, patience, your consistency and accountability. Making an effort to improve yourself everyday is the goal.

This month, our goal is to select food in its most whole, natural state, free of added unpleasantries. This is a lifestyle, not a short-term diet. Rule of thumb: eat 100% clean 80% of the time. That means 8 of 10 meals/snacks are "perfect." The 2 out of 10 can be your choice. Make an effort over the next 30 days and you will get results.

If you want to jump in and join my group then friend me on Facebook.com/maria365 and we'll take it from there!

Countdown to Summer is on!

I don't know anyone who is NOT looking forward to the Summer.  Lazy days, warmer temps, fresh seasonal fruits....BATHING SUITS!

Maybe you're not quite beach-ready.  Don't worry.  There are less than 30 days till Memorial Day weekend.  Did you know you can accomplish alot in a short amount of time?I am doing a FREE clean eating challenge for 14 days starting May 6th and it's for those who need a jump start to clean eating. Its a private Facebook group with only 5 members. This is for those who are NOT part of my current group and who DO NOT currently have a coach or have done a challenge with me before. Message me I will give you the details. ***3 spots left*** Wednesday 5/1 is the last day today to join.

Get focused, be determined and commit to yourself.

4 weeks ago, I led a small group who consistently posted their nutrition (meal plans were given) and reported their workout of the day.  Rules were given, strict accountability was enforced and they got RESULTS.

I personally lost a whole size and fit back into my favorite jeans!  Just losing 7-8 pounds can make a huge difference to your mental, physical and emotional well being.

Connect with me on myfitnesspal/maria365 and check out my diary.  What made a difference for me was replacing one meal a day with Shakeology.

Message me at maria365@aol.com and put "Summer Challenge" in the subject line.

Remember, if you want something you've never had, you've got to do something you've never done.
